The new Formula One Qualifying is good!

There are two things I like about Formula One Qualifying this year;

  • We actually see it! It was never shown, other than a 30 second news clip, when Formula One was on free to air TV. Sky Digital does cost but at least they are showing the full session which is great.
  • Its actually good to watch.Have they finally found a Formula One Qualifying system that works?

Apart from the round & round fuel burn section, before the top ten do their final runs, the 2006 set-up seems to be an improvement on the previous arrangements. I saw the previous systems live in Melbourne and this new one seems to offer a bit of both. You get the potential traffic problems that made the 1 hour “long wait then everyone out” system interesting and the pressure of needing a perfect lap,several in fact, as the previous 1 car out system required .

I’m still not sure about the 10 place drop for an engine change. Seems a bit cruel to penalise a driver for mechanical problems when, apart from driving style, they have little influence on them. Maybe they could impose a penally on constructors points, loose 2 or 3 team pts per change?, and leave the car where it qualifies on the grid?
