Hubnut drives a Volvo 164
Took me back to driving my grandfather's which had an interesting journey to New Zealand
I doubt many cars have made the journey from Sweden to Norfolk Island, to New Zealand...
My Grandfather got a new a Volvo 164 when he lived on Norfolk Island. When my grandparents retired back to NZ, they brought it (and a Mazda 323) with them.
I drove it a few times in NZ, mostly remember incredibly light precise responsive power steering. Hubnut says it is weighty compared to a comparable Jaguar XJ, but my comparison yardstick back then was pretty low... the Austin-Morris Marina I learned to drive in.
When Ian mentioned the power output the number rang a bell. I looked it up and the 3.0L straight six engine (with fuel injection) has almost the same power and torque output as my current Abarth (1.4L 4cyl turbo).
I wasn't a fan of the automatic transmission, still aren't, but remember the engine being smooth and effortless. I think that particular 164 is long gone but have seen at least one still on the road in NZ (below).
