Although he is writing about the U.K. the part about those who benefited from social support, almost free education, govt housing build keeping the private market house entry prices low, and social support, getting into government then stripping support and services that got them there also applies to New Zealand*️⃣.

Not all our 'conservatives' were in right leaning parties; some took a nominally centre left party (Labour in the mid-late 80s) there too.
