VE Commodore, why so dull?

The VE Commodore is the biggest single product investment in the history of the Australian automotive industry. So why did they make it look so dull?

I hope its better in the metal, than the preview photos, as it seems very conservative for a design that has to be around a long time. Take a bit of BA Falcon at the front, add Mondeo/Audi wheel-arches and even some Mitsubishi 380 (which also looked dated at launch) towards the rear and you’d be close to the VE. Is that really enough?
