US Grand Prix - Farce or not, there was no alternative
The US Grand Prix was a farce but one created primarily by Michelin and in part by current tyre regulations. Like everyone I feel sorry for the fans that spent hard earned money to watch one of the strangest races in Formula One history unfold
I can’t see, in spite of all the wailing, any alternative to what happened. Look at the potential outcome of any alternative suggested by Michelin and the teams they supply and you still have a farce;
- Add a Chicane for the Michelin Teams:
- Essentially they said “We don’t have a car that complete the race on this track safely, change it”. If that applied to all teams perhaps fair enough but the result shows 6 cars were perfectly capable of finishing with no track changes. Changing to suit a few would be a farce.
- If you change a track to suit the technical deficiency of some teams at one track what would stop that appeal being made at all tracks. If a team said “Our engine will explode at high rev’s endangering the driver” and that engine complied with the regulations do you put a chicane in all the straights on safety grounds? Farce.
- Does every team design beyond the limits of the possible then try and negotiate concessions at the track? Farce.
- Let Michelin Teams run with different tyres and collect no points:
- So what happens when/if a “non-runner” interferes with the “runners” by blocking or colliding. Farce
- What is the point of this non-race race. To pretend there is a race & hope the yanks are too thick to notice? Farce.
What happened was a farce but it was the only outcome possible from a situation caused by either a simple error or plain optimism pushing specifications beyond the limit. Racing is tough, sometimes on the spectators.
