The [hidden] cost of transportation

Walking/cycling accessible facilities and services are priceless

It's interesting that, more by accident than design, I currently live within walking distance of corner (general) stores, 'market style' fresh produce & meat, a couple of parks, and 5 min by bike from a train station with CBD access.

That takes about 45min by train/bike, 60 min cycling (mostly bike paths), with both about the same time it takes to drive if 'going with the morning/evening traffic flows' but more like 35-40 minutes off-peak.

I was looking at a house for sale recently—an open home seen while cycling—that is only a few km further away, would offer most of the same facilities, but add ~20-30 minutes (and a steep hill) by bike, or require the car, to access them.

I'm not considering a move, but not sure I previously would have even factored that into the decision. When you don't have something easily walking/cycling accessible, which is the case for many living in suburbs (especially new ones), you don't know how much you'll miss it...
