Strange mouse wheel "zoom extents" behaviour in AutoCAD

Had a weird problem today where, in addition to the usual double click to zoom extents, just pressing and releasing the mouse wheel would cause a zoom extents. Not very helpful as every mouse wheel pan would end in a zoom extents!
After checking the AutoCAD Mouse options, with no success, I looked at the system driver. The mouse was a Microsoft Intellipoint Explorer and worked OK but the driver looked rather "generic windows".
Installing correct Intellipoint software didn't help but allowed extra settings for the mouse including "exception applications" for the scroll wheel behaviour. Adding acad.exe as an exception with the scroll wheel set to "middle button" seemed to resolve the spontaneous zoom!
