I recently updated to ZoneAlarm 8 & began experiencing very slow (5 minute +) Windows XP shutdowns. After submitting a support request I found this is a known problem that is being worked on. Until a fix is released there are two workarounds;

  1. Keep ZoneAlarm 8 but close it manually just before before shutting down Windows.
  2. Revert to ZoneAlarm 7 until a fix is out.

I found the (1) works fine; ZoneAlarm closes in 10-15 seconds, the Windows shutdown only takes the usual 30-40 seconds.
