Happy New Year!
I usually begin this post with "Another year has flown by..." but 2022 was a strange mix of COVID-19 impacted lockdown time dilation—where it both flew and dragged simultaneously—and a (temporary) change of lifestyle for me. I spent most of it—January to August—travelling New Zealand and then started a new job (still design software related) in a different industry!
Time to look back from a bloggy/social media (not just CAD blog) perspective at year:
Best social media related event(s):
While riding I've been contributing, in a small way, to a few episodes of Walk The Pod podcast. It was great when, in November, WTP came to NZ as I met up with some travelling U.K. listeners and we recorded a couple of WTPNZs! Even more of a surprise when they came along to Skeptics In The Pub and we all met a Pontus & Claire from the European Skeptics Podcast. They were travelling in NZ after attending the Australian Skeptics Conference.
Best new media (Podcasters and YouTubers):
I listen, view, and support, a lot of creators added a few more to the play list this year. Some of the best discovered include:
- Benson The Biking Viking
- I discovered this a few episodes in but have caught up and enjoy Benson's Vlogs of his bicycle touring trip from Alaska to Argentina. His episodes cover a section of the tour, usually around 1,00km or noteworthy events like border crossings. As I write he's just posted episode eight from San Francisco to the Mexico border.
- 2 Bikes 1 Wheelchair 3000 Miles Across The USA
- I've been watching Francis Cade for a long time but this daily vlog of him and Justin (on a hand bike) cycling across the U.S.A has been great. Looks like they might finish by the time this is posted.
- Updated Jan 1 2023: they rode to an amazing finish in L.A.
- Alluring Arctic Sailing
- Started watching Juho sailing in the Artic but more recently the videos covered buying an abandoned boat in San Francisco, renovation and (currently) sailing the Canadian coast headed for more Artic sailing via the Northwest Passage
- Adventures of an old Seadog
- The channel description says it all: "Gritty down to earth videos of sailing singlehanded across the globe. Showing the bad as well as the good, the heart aches and the triumphs of one mans' quest to live his dream." Tony was locked down in NZ, Whangarei, when i started watching but has since set sail for the Pacific and Australia.
Best new, to me, social media tool:
With the changes Elon's ownership brought to Twitter I have abandoned it (leaving my account in-place) and moved to Mastodon at @[email protected]. That change was made easier as a lot of the Twitter community I enjoyed have also made the same move.
Thanks for visiting, reading, following, and commenting wherever you do. Let's see what 2023 brings!
