Another year has flown by and it is nearly 2020. Time to look back at 2019 from a bloggy/social media (not just CAD blog) perspective:
Best social media related event(s):
It wasn’t really a social media event but a podcast took me somewhere I didn’t think I would ever go. Dr Karl’s Podcast is a regular on my playlist. Finding out he was leading an expedition cruise to Antarctica this year made it a ‘must go’.
After being back a few weeks I have only just sorted out the photos worth keeping (2800) and still have much to write about that experience. I will always remember 2019 for the 12 days spent with inspirational people (Karl, Crew and fellow passengers) in a staggeringly awe inspiring place. Oh, and the ‘night’ (where it never really got dark) spent not really sleeping on the ice.
The reason for not sleeping much, toasty warm in the supplied bivvy bag, was simply not wanting to miss this:
Best social media comment
I no longer get many comments on the blog itself but the social media links to Twitter and Facebook often generate comment there. However I was surprised to get a proper (non-spam) comment from Ben on a post from 2004. It was about the change of RSS feed on a (still) brilliant content curation site Arts & Letters Daily. The most viewed post, about Surface Go, also generated some good blog comments.
Social media surprise?
Finding out (via a Facebook Fiat Fan) my Fiat Bravo HGT is one of just three left in New Zealand and via “Honest John” there are only twenty one left in the U.K.
Best podcast(s):
I listen to, and support, a lot of podcasts added a few more to the play list this year. Some of the best discovered include:
- The Cyclist Pod | I’m not really interested in ‘pro cycling’ and either is this podcast (although they occasionally talk about it).Hosted by triathlete @rayahubbell and comedian @stephencgrant it covers all aspects of recreational cycling.
- Dolly Parton's America | Not a Dolly fan at all but this podcast (from Radio Lab’s Jad Abumrad) is superb look at an astonishing woman
- Motoring Podcast (news) and Rear View| U.K. based but the motor industry news is applicable. Sister podcast Rear View is long form interviews with motoring industry and media folk, some great conversations.
- The Collecting Cars Podcast with Chris Harris | Chris and his car journo mates chatting about cars and the Brit motor media.
- Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster | What’s your favourite, no holds barred, meal? Ed & James ask their guests just that!
Best new(ish) social media tool:
For this year is it the revamped Pocket Casts https://www.pocketcasts.com/
The mobile apps (iOS & Android) are free but I added the modestly priced “Plus upgrade” which adds desktop (Windows & Mac) apps, webpage access and several other features. Your subscriptions, play state (listened to & progress in current podcast) and history are sync’ed across all devices which is brilliant. I use it on my phone & Surfaces all the time.
Happy New Year!
Thanks for visiting, reading, following and commenting wherever you do. Lets see what 2020 brings!
