Another year has flown by and it is nearly 2019. Time to look back at 2018 from a bloggy/social media (not just CAD blog) perspective:
Best social media related event(s):
The best event I attended last year I only got to thanks to social media. It was an honour to cover BiLT ANZ 2018 for Autodesk User Group International (AUGI). It was my first visit to Brisbane and my first BiLT since the name change from RTC. A fantastic event, networking, learning, and socialising covered in these posts on the AUGI Blog:
Although I haven't posted about it (yet) in October I also met several science/skeptic blogger/podcasters I follow at the Australian Skeptics Conference in Sydney. This included Dr Alice (Skeptics with a K), Carrie Poppy (Oh No, Ross and Carrie), Yvette ‘SciBabe’ d’Entremont and Dr Karl. I plan to get to know that last one in particular much better in 2019.
Thanks to a tweet from @iangriffin I attended a really interesting evening of talks on space weather and Aurora photography. If not for his tweet I would not have known it was on, missed a great event, and not met Ian.
I think social media truly is about who you follow.
Best social media comment:
I no longer get many comments on the blog itself but the social media links to Twitter and Facebook often generate comment there. However, a post about my Surface Go did generate a conversation, like the good old days of blogging, the the post comments! That post also got quite a lot of traffic, perhaps it was the dog in the background…
Social media surprise?
Had to be ending up in the national news after a journalist saw this tweet (and linked blog) about a cycling near hit incident:
SH16 cycling near hit, still here thanks to my rear view mirror (& reported) https://t.co/C7uxCBUpAu Starting to feel like I'm @AlecTang_ or something!@BikeAKL @NZTAAkl

Best podcast(s):
I listen to, and support, a lot of podcasts added a few more to the play list this year. Some of the best include
- Whatever Happened to Pizza at McDonald's? | An investigative journalism program (IJP) where Brian Thompson (a journalist) seeks to discover why McDonald's stopped serving pizza.
My Dad Wrote a Porno |“With over 150 million downloads, a sell-out world tour, Hollywood fans including Dame Emma Thompson, Elijah Wood, Daisy Ridley, Nicholas Hoult & Michael Sheen and …” I'm probably the last person on earth with a podcast player to hear this one but hadn't heard any until their guest appearance on Richard Herring's (also excellent) Leicester Square Theatre Podcast | I’ve now caught up (with 4 seasons) and look forward to book 5!
The Adam Buxton Podcast | I knew of Adam but most of his work didn't make it to NZ. Only recently started listening to the podcast and really like it. Long conversations with comics, celebs just great.
Beyond The Grid | Amazing conversations with F1 people, past and present, with Tom Clarkson. I thought I knew a lot about Formula 1 but every episode has revealed at least one story I had never heard before
Best new social media tool:
Cycliq cameras on my bike! Nice hardware which has made me a better cyclist (you are on camera too) and I think will change how people respond to cyclists as they become more common. You can see some posts of the content here.
Happy New Year!
Thanks for visiting, reading, following and commenting wherever you do. Lets see what 2019 brings!
