It’s hard to avoid BIM, even when you’re on holiday. I must admit the prime motivation for visiting the Maritime Museum was a recently opened exhibit:
It features the 1995 America’s Cup-winning boat NZL32 – Black Magic suspended in mid-air surrounded by exhibits. They showcase the development of yachting as recreation/sport (rather than transport) and New Zealand’s competitive yachting history. While Sir Peter Blake is, deservedly, prominent it is a tribute to the achievements of all Kiwi yachties, designers, sail makers and boat builders; both local and international.
You enter the exhibit at an “underwater” level looking at the bulb, keel and underside of the the America’s Cup yacht. A long ramp lined with small yachts takes you up, more than 4 metres, to above its deck level and it was there that I found BIM.
In this case it wasn’t a Building Information Model, just the name of this Flying Ant (class) yacht!
It’s bad it takes entertaining visitors to get you to visit a great local attraction but I really recommend:
