Dragos has 44 great tips for long distance travel but I’d add one more to reduce the need;
45. Don’t live in New Zealand, just about everywhere is a long haul trip from here!
Dragos’s first tip is.
1. Make A Standard Packing List and refine it every trip: I do have a minimal packing routine and I always start by getting it done first. After my minimum is done, I try to figure out what exactly I need in rapport to that specific destination: is it going to be clothing? Or maybe some specific medicines I should carry on? Sun glasses and sunscreen? I’m usually done in one hour, regardless of the final destination.
It is probably no surprise to regular readers that I use MindManager for my travel plans and my packing list is part of it. I also have sections like pre-flight and check out as memory prompts for those times when you need a mix of items/process. Some are really obvious, passport, others seemingly trivial. Check you’ve got an AAA Battery is not a big deal until you are on the aircraft with 14 hours flying ahead and flat Bose QC Headphones…
I export the map to Word to print my itinerary and upload the map and an HTML export to a secure web site. That means the info is available without MindManager should the print get lost. For the AU 2009 trip I’ll try bringing the map on my iPhone for reference on the move but will still be carrying a dead tree version as back up!

It was an exciting time, knowing my propensity for travel as a personal development tool, but it was also pretty draining. Never having long distance trips until that was definitely a huge roadblock for me. I had to learn on the fly (sometimes, literally on the fly). Somewhere between my 2nd and 3rd trip I started to write down some simple steps I should follow, sort of self directed tutorial. For your information, long distance travelling means for me one to two weeks trips which includes at least a transcontinental flight longer than 7-8 hours….
