I’ve had a Vox blog for a while and in many ways it’s a superior platform to TypePad. Both are from the same company, Six Apart, but Vox is free* while TypePad is a paid service. It seems a little backward that “free” is better but Vox, about two years old, is based on newer infrastructure than TypePad which is five years old!
Vox has more social network/community features and is much better at integrating multimedia.Getting a photo from Flickr, a book from Amazon or a YouTube video is much simpler in Vox. It’s less “customisable” but given the target market that’s not a major limitation.
The good news is that TypePad is in the process of moving to a new infrastructure. Ben’s post shares some of the challenges faced moving a large user base to a new platform and what it will mean for TypePad users. I’m looking forward to using TypePad 2.0!

In short: We’re migrating TypePad to a next-generation platform, essentially a new infrastructure based on the best of what we’ve learned from Vox, Movable Type and over five years of development on TypePad
