The Five Embarrassing Songs meme

Jack Yan posted this meme and it gives me a chance to share a great line I heard tonight from Kiwi rocker, now Radio Live host, Andrew Fagan;

A caller asked: What was your best song?
He replied: One from an album which nobody else liked… my most popular was 'forever tuesday morning’

The meme is “share your most embarrassing songs” but Jack broke some of the rules, and I prefer his evolution;

The songs:
Here’s the thing: not a heck of a lot embarrasses me, especially not song preferences. So I will name some songs that you’d expect me to be embarrassed about but I am not…

Jack already listed one of mine (3) so here are a few more;

1: Soolaimon/Brother Love's Travelling Salvation ~ Hot August Night ~ Neil Diamond;  As a kid I had a small drum kit. At the weekend I used to get up early, put this track on the turntable and bash them, sort of, in time to the drum line. Then I’d do it again, and again, and again...  Luckily the venue, our living room, was at the opposite end of the, rather long skinny, house from the bedrooms. My parents must have known something when they planned that!

2: The Turn of a Friendly Card – Alan Parsons Project. It’s a 70’s style (but released in 1980) symphonic pop concept album about gambling. I always liked it but it’s here because lyrics often came to mind after Autodesk University; watching the punters while wandering around those endless Vegas casinos;

There are unsmiling faces and bright plastic chains
And a wheel in perpetual motion
And they follow the races and pay out the gains
With no show of an outward emotion

And they think it will make their lives easier
For God knows up till now it's been hard
But the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card

3: ‘Jerusalem’ & Chariots Of Fire (title suite) ~ Vangelis; ‘Did those feet in ancient time / Walk upon England’s mountains green?’. Well no, I don’t think they did but this version (from the sound-track album) still appeals decades after it’s release. If you’ve seen the movie can you hear it without imagining; feet, in slightly more modern times, running – in slow motion – upon Englands beaches sand?

4:  Bohemian Rhapsody ~ Classic Rock ~ London Symphony Orchestra (1987); It’s the Queen classic but I think this classical orchestra & choir (but still some electric guitar) arrangement is much better than the original. My Dad owned it on vinyl in the 70’s and I recently got a second hand, rare 30 year old, CD from Amazon. It wasn’t cheap but was worth every cent!

5: Fishing Junks at Sunset ~ Jarre In China ~  Jean Michel Jarre; This is a strange mixture of traditional Chinese and Synth-Pop Orchestral sounds. It’s originally from the 1982 album “The Concerts in China”,but I now prefer a more modern version from the DVD Jarre In China. It’s his 2006 performance from Beijing’s Forbidden City & Tian’Anmen Square and combines JMJ’s electronic sounds with the 260 strong traditional Chinese and Western orchestra. As the first ever THX certified recording of a live 5.1 surround sound concert filmed in HD it’s artistically, technically, visually & audibly stunning.
