I came home from AU to find a bandit waiting. Not a problem as it was only a new version of the RSS Feed Reader – RSS Bandit. It has a cool new logo and updated smiley face Bandit icon.
There are some nice new features: I think the best is that items can be marked as read/unread and flagged/un-flagged directly from the newspaper view. This makes reading much easier as you previously had to find the article in the article list.
The keyboard shortcut for "Mark All Items As Read" changed to Ctrl+Q from Ctrl+M. This has caused a bit of comment from some users but I prefer it as it’s less of a stretch. If you prefer the old mapping (or your own) the latest .42 bug-fix includes an application, ShortcutsEditor.exe, to allow customisation of the keyboard shortcuts.
New feeds are now added with a “Subscription Wizard. It leads you through the process of adding a feed: discovering the feed, name and folder location, user-name/password (if req), update frequency and display options. The feed auto-discovery toolbar icon is now the Firefox/IE7 RSS icon.
These are a few features I like, for a full list of changes to see Dares posts on; .38 updates & .42 changes.
There are many ways to read RSS feeds but I’ve found RSS Bandit to be the best. For me the best feature is it’s ability to move my feed-list, inc. “read state”, between locations without being dependent on on-line services*. Just upload the feed-state to a USB drive and sync. in the new location and you’re ready to go. It’s fast, local yet portable – a great combination.
