The Ti Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai Cycle Path (TKACP) runs from Kohimarama Rd to Orakei Basin (Yellow Arrow). It links to the existing Glen Innes (Merton Rd - Kohimarama Rd) path and will link to the Tamaki Drive waterfront path via a mix of boardwalks and roadside paths along Ngapipi Rd (Yellow Dashed Line) that are in the design/consultation stage.
It was part of a ride from home, variation of a regular ride to explore the new path.
Nice day for a ride
Towards Onehunga, love this downhill, beyond sight is an evil 11%+ gradient climb which is why I ride this way!
The new Mangere Bridge shared path bridge under construction. It replaces the structurally compromised former road bridge in the same location.
It will replace the 'SH20 Underpass' cycle path slung under the motorway bridge. It was built with the highway in the early 1980s but quickly became a dingy, broken glass strewn, graffitied horror most avoided in favour of the hundred-year-old open-air road bridge. When it was demolished for the rebuild, the SH20 path was cleaned up, painted, properly lit, and 24-hour security cover implemented. After that it was fine, but the operating costs are high (2+ guards x 24/7) so will be closed when the new shared pedestrian/bike bridge is completed.
Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai (the path of land and sea)
Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai Path starts at Merton Avenue in Glen Innes and now goes all the way to Orakei Basin.
Pourewa Valley to Orakei Basin
The new path descends from Kohimarama Rd and follows the Pourewa Valley, and railway, to Orakei Basin
Extensive, expensive, raised paths and bridge over the railway along Pourewa Valley
Nice wide shared use path, not many around mid-afternoon on a Thursday but is busy at weekends, school, and city commuter use.
The path climbs after Meadowbank Train Station before descending to Orakei Basin
The Orakei Basin 'boardwalk' uses metal mesh plates with stainless retaining clips that jingle as you ride along. First time I wondered if something was loose on the bike!
Popped along Tamaki Drive to St Heliers, no sign of Phil Read today...
Home via the Grafton Gully path over Spaghetti Junction
SH16 North-Western Cycleway
Even at four in the afternoon the SH16 North-Western Cycleway was a better option than the 'motorway' beside it...
On-ramp queue at St Lukes Road
On-ramp queue at Waterview
Off-ramp queue at Lincoln Road, Henderson
Evening shadows at Henderson Park, home is at the base of the Waitakere Ranges in the background.
