I was inspired to try this after seeing Kyle's tweet:
Hot Cross buns with Vegemite.

Yes/ No? pic.twitter.com/uFwlizP4Pc
My taste buds said 'NO!' but my brain thought 'But what would it taste like....?'.
Not wanting to sacrifice (appropriate word in this context) an entire Hot Cross Bun I thought about just having half. Then looked at the other spreads in the pantry/fridge and decided to be a little more scientific: Quarters, three spreads with a base for comparison!
Bakers Delight Apple & Cinnamon Hot Cross Bun Base Configuration
Just add butter, except it was actually Olivani because it's what I had, lockdown etc...
Base Taste: Nice blend of apple cinnamon goodness complimented with the buttery Olivani, nice!
Base + Anathoth Farm Three Berry Jam (strawberries, boysenberries and blackcurrants)
A rich sweet triple berry jam worked well with the base, but was very sweet. A must, in moderation...
Base + Pics Peanut Butter (salted)
The peanut butter complimented the base flavours, adding a savory overtone. Not sure I'd have it every day but not that different to fruit bread.
Base + Vegemite
The base apple cinnamon blend was not overpowered by a thin (by my usual standards) spread of vegemite. It showed in a salty initial taste, mixed with the bun flavour, followed by a yeasty Vegemite aftertaste. Not life changing, but not terrible either. If you like a sweet/savory mix give it a go!
Conclusion
The study is flawed, just a sample size of one, and now in COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown I'm not prepared to risk the last four buns...
