Caught this series when it aired on Sky NZ recently. Found it interesting as it based on real stories — diaries and letters — from the perspective of soldiers, housewives, factory workers, nurses and children impacted by the War.
14 - Diaries of the Great War (titled Great War Diaries when aired on the BBC)
is a 2014 international documentary drama series about World War I. It uses a mix of acted scenes, archive footage, and animation.
It is a French, Canadian and German co-production — with experiences from all sides of the war — and presents a different view; focused more on the impact and emotions for those involved than just historical fact (without missing that).
It also offers some unusual viewpoints such as Australian Music Teacher Ethel Cooper. She was stranded in Leipzig when war broke out — regarded a foreign enemy and not allowed to leave — who suffered the hardships war bought to all in the city.
It was great to see after recently hearing Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History series “Blueprint for Armageddon” podcast about WW1 which also mentioned some of the people featured. Worth finding if you have any interest in the history of World War One.
