About 20 years ago I got a 27” Sony Trinitron TV. It was state of the art with NICAM Stereo and Teletext.
About 6 years ago it was still going fine but the PAL only circuits couldn’t cope with NTSC DVD’s. Our local PAL region 4 DVD catalog was dismal so it was time for an update to view those good overseas discs.
I got another Sony Trinitron, a then state of the art ES29, and donated the old one to my Aunt who has had it ever since. Recently the picture started breaking up as some of those 20 year old components finally cried enough. She replaced it with a new Sony but what do you do with an old TV?
Fortunately, the local council has periodic “inorganic” rubbish collections and for a week or so the streets are full of all the stuff people no longer want as they need to make room for new stuff. You see the most amazing collections of household goods on the kerbside. The streets are also jammed with slow moving cars as people pick thru the piles redistributing the junk before the collection arrives. It’s like another economy as someone’s junk becomes others treasure.
I went around today and moved the old TV, still looking pretty good for it’s age, from her garage to the kerbside ready for the collection then went inside for a chat. When I left, maybe 20 minutes later, there was no sign of it. Gone in the great Organic Collection re-shuffle.
So it’s gone, but not forgotten, I wonder where it will end up…
