James May, Top Gear Host, has dumped his old Range Rover and now travels by Panda in an effort to save the planet, well England anyway. You won’t find him on the back of a black and white furry Chinese animal… but behind the wheel of a 1.2 Litre Fiat Panda.
He says it refuses to do less than 40mpg which seems a bit low. The mighty Uno 45S averages 44, easily exceeds 50mpg if you get out of the city, irrespective of how I drive but I suppose it’s even lighter, flimsier and less powerful than a Panda.
People think I’m nuts driving an low powered small car but it’s actually more fun. It’s not the speed you go, but how far you are pushing the envelope. With less than 45bhp the challenge becomes maintaining high average speeds and often you are driving at the limit, literally foot to the floor, with no danger of licence threatening velocities!
Can’t do that in your megaturbo jap import…

“I've sold my aging Range Rover and bought a new 1.2-litre Fiat Panda, a car that steadfastly refuses to drop below 40mpg even if I thrash it and which, if I'm not paying attention, will readily crack 50. It saves petrol, and that is something we need to do.”
