Old jets & false memories
The BAC One-Eleven, New Zealand & me
The BAC One-Eleven (BAC 1-11) is responsible for a false memory. I'd have sworn the Royal New Zealand Airforce (RNZAF) had one: they didn't.
The only firm connection to New Zealand seems to be the British trying to sell them to our domestic airline National Airways Corporation (NAC)—including a visit for the Auckland Airport opening—who opted for Boeing 737. I don't remember that as was between 0-1 years-old!
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) did have two BAC 1-11—and it seems they may have flown in New Zealand—so maybe I'm dredging up childhood memories of seeing them visiting NZ?
Mentour Pilot tells the fascinating story of how this aircraft—despite being a market failure in comparison to its US McDonald Douglas DC-9 & Boeing 727 competitors—was a true innovator that contributed to both Concorde and today's Airbus.
