Auckland has a large chunk* of NZ’s population; 1,241,600 of the total 4,098,300.

According to Worldmapper New Zealand has the highest concentration of cars/person in the world at 61 cars per 100 people, beating the US with a mere 48/100.

Lots of people live here, more of them than anywhere on earth have cars (in my opinion the result of a useless public transport and the Japanese Used Car imports), the roading system is still not complete… Traffic Jam.

In 2002 there were 590 million cars in the world. That is one for every ten people: 140 million cars in the United States, 55 million in Japan. This contrasts with just nine million cars in China and 6 million in India.
Western European territories dominate the top ten list of the most cars per person. New Zealand, however, is at the top of this list, with 61 cars per hundred people. As 23% of the population of New Zealand are under 14 years old, that is almost a car per person for everyone old enough to drive.
