This months banner is Greg the Takahē. He lives, with partner "Cheesecake" and chick, on Tiritiri Matangi - an island reserve near Auckland (more images here).
Takahē were considered extinct until "rediscovered" in 1948 and are still very rare. There are about 100-150 in the wild, another 100 or so in island reserves. Greg may be rare but that doesn't mean he's shy, patrolling the beach trying to steal food and (it seemed) anything yellow off visitors.
