I’ve decided the problem behind TVNZ’s falling ratings is nobody can possibly predict when their programmes are going to screen. To remedy this I propose the following, rather drastic, changes to their promotions;
- Promote a programme at every opportunity for weeks ahead.
- Repeat old versions while promoting the new version.
- Promote the next programme at every ad break in the previous programme. Another few minutes promotion won’t be very noticeable.
- Cut, shrink or shorten the close and credits of a programme to announce what is coming next. That musician won’t mind their score being mangled, the director won’t worry about the elegant finale being clipped, squashed or totally amputated.
- Promote a programme during other programmes with a sparkley fly-over graphic or sub-title format caption. Being totally irrelevant to the current subject matter should be no impediment to this.
- Pretend the programme is a worthy subject for primetime news
- Pretend the programme is a worthy subject for a high-quality, reporter-driven, current affairs story
- Promote it on Websites, billboards, bus shelters.
- Promote it on the other channel, while promoting the other channel on the other channel.
- Then repeat it in prime-time, and promote that…
- Then do a highlights show, maybe even repeat that, and don’t forget to promote it.
It’s radical I know, but I think it will increase market share for someone. It’s certain making me read more…

PS: TV3 could try this, maybe start with The Simpsons, Prime with Top Gear!
