Autodesk FMDesktop RIP

I never used FMDesktop but did see it in action at several Autodesk University Sessions. I quite liked what I saw and when Autodesk acquired it wondered how it would fit in the process. Seemed more logical to promote AutoCAD, ACA or Revit than work with a DWF file base but often the users of the facility don't have access to the design data.

Back at home enquiries revealed that, like Architectural Studio RIP, it wasn't even available in New Zealand. Perhaps a look at the NZ Price list, and any omissions compared to the US, will reveal a products long term future as FMDesktop has also been killed off before arrival.

Choosing a platform is a major concern for BIM Facilities Management where implementation is the majority of the investment and expected use far exceeds any typical IT application life cycle. Buildings will be around when BIM is long forgotten but will those models still be of use when "the next generation", what ever it is, arrives.
