ActiveWords today

Things have changed a bit since my last post in 2008...

ActiveWords today
ActiveWords 4 got a new logo too!

I've used, as a paying customer, ActiveWords since I discovered it in 2005. I wrote the “More for less with ActiveWords” series of posts way back then. They are still valid, but ActiveWords has changed for the better over the years, and this post features the more recent user focused changes.

A new UI

The ActiveWords database editor has a fresh look and additional capabilities.

The UI for creating, sorting, finding and editing your actions has become much slicker. Tags allow you to group words, the editor allows bulk tag and word assignment and multiple trigger actions.

The current Database and Action UI

The ActiveWords Monitor and Icon

The Monitor 'echoes' your typing input and ActiveWords responses. This is useful while you get used to using ActiveWords.

The floating icon gives Right Click > access to ActiveWords actions & options. The same menu is available Right Clicking the ActiveWords icon in the tasktray. You can drag’n drop almost any content or Windows objects (folders, documents, URLs etc) to the floating Icon, instantly creating Words and Actions.

Both icon and monitor can be repositioned independently or hidden—with no loss of functionality—if desired, and that is how I use ActiveWords.

Search & Trigger Actions

A modeless pop-up search allows you to find Actions, handy while you are establishing your ActiveWords habits. rbf

If you assign the same ActiveWord to multiple items a small pop-up selector appears before the chosen action is triggered.

Sync, one ActiveWords for all your machines

If you use several computers, and cloud or shared network storage, you can have a shared ActiveWords database across all your Windows devices.

ActiveWords manages and syncs the local database on each device so edits on one device will be available on all others, next time devices are connected. Multiple cloud services are supported, and 'Other' can be set to any shared drive/folder path.
